In this piece I attempt to convey the feeling of being in our backyard surrounded by gardens, beehives, and trees. The title spiraling suggests the subtle shifting, movement, and growth happening in this urban oasis.

The textures and layers create a collage that alludes to cameos and a dreamlike story. This piece was also inspired by Joseph Cornell’s art. His collages and boxes have fascinated me ever since I first saw them at the Art Institute of Chicago as a child.

This piece is about the interconnectedness of nature. A large circle, planetary shapes, and stars clinging to the vase in front of a horizon play with this idea in a surrealist way.

The title refers to leaves from plants that float around this portrait of a girl, and the pages of books, which have been cut and torn to create texture in this mixed-media piece. In a digital age, I enjoy giving printed words and diagrams and other tactile materials--including the box that this collage was made on--a new purpose.

I am interested in words and their meanings. Cameo might refer to a portrait, carved in relief on an oval-shaped brooch. But it can also be a short, descriptive literary sketch, and in the performing arts, the brief appearance or voice of a well-known person is also called a cameo.
